Council Point WTP Tour

By Teresa Konda [HDR]

Twenty-two people attended the tour of the Council Bluffs Water Works Council Point Water Treatment Plant on April 25, 2014. Attendees included university students and professors; operators and administrators from local utilities, including the cities of Fremont, Blair, Plattsmouth, and Beaver Lake; and consulting engineers.

Doug Drummey, General Manager of the Council Bluffs Water Works, provided an introduction to the facility and an overview of the treatment process to the entire group. The participants then divided into five smaller groups for more in-depth tours and explanations of the processes. The facility is a new 5 MGD integrated UF/RO membrane treatment plant, expandable to 10 MGD. In addition to the membrane treatment processes, the plant processes include pretreatment through oxidation, on-site sodium hypochlorite generation, chemical storage and feed systems, solids disposal, treated water storage, and high-service pumping.

The Nebraska Section AWWA Young Professionals committee is grateful to the Council Bluffs Water Works for the opportunity to visit their new, state-of-the-art facility.
