Nebraska Raises Almost $7,000 for Water for People

2018 was a fruitful year for the Nebraska Section AWWA Water For People Committee. Our activities raised over $6,900 for Water For People and had a combined total attendance of 145 people:

  1. Wine Tasting in March: Raised $1,230 with 40 attendees. Event Chair: Teresa Konda.
  2. Golf Outing in May: Raised $3,600 with 72 attendees. Event Chair: Joe Roberts.
  3. Clays Shooting Event in September: Raised $1,235 with 33 attendees. Event Chair: Marc Rosso.
  4. Fall Conference Raffle in November: Raised $850.

Jim Persson attended a committee workshop at Water For People headquarters in Denver in July to learn more about the work that Water For People does around the world and how Water For People utilizes the funds raised by the local committees.

The Water For People Committee was fortunate to have a supportive partner in the Nebraska AWWA and NWEA Young Professionals (YP) Committee. The YP Committee partnered with the Iowa AWWA and IAWEA YPs to host a meet-and-greet with Linda and Gary De Kock, who canoed the entire length of the Missouri River in 2018 to raise awareness and money for Water For People. The De Kocks had a stop-over in Omaha and were generous with their time in meeting with the YPs and guests at NP Dodge Park to share their stories. The De Kocks completed their journey and raised over $24,000 for Water for People.

The Nebraska AWWA and NWEA YP Committees also hosted their popular Poker Tournament at the Fall Conference in Kearney and donated the $3000 they raised from this event to Water For People.

The Nebraska Section AWWA Water For People Committee will have new leadership in 2019. Ann Williams will take over as the Committee Chair. In addition to continuing to facilitate the traditional fundraising events, Ann would like to identify an opportunity to provide education about Water For People's role in meeting the need for safe drinking water and sanitation around the world. If you are interested in becoming involved in the educational or fundraising efforts of Water For People, please contact us.

The Water For People Committee was grateful to receive the support of the Nebraska AWWA Section membership and Board of Directors in 2018. Thank you!
